Roads in America cover the whole country, and every town is easily reachable through the comprehensive network of routes. As well as offering a reliable way of getting around the country, travel by road is also one of the best ways to see the US and is something of a tourist attraction in itself. Local bus services are frequent and cheap, and national services are offered widely – the main operator being Greyhound, who offer reasonably comfortable and reliable journeys for very affordable prices. Other public transport is cheap and affordable, as well as having something of a mystique surrounding some elements – the New York subway, for example, or the antique trams of San Francisco. Rail services in the US are not the most popular method of getting around, and journeys can prove expensive or surprisingly slow. Nevertheless, the more reliable routes should be experienced for the amount of wonderful scenery they kick up, and in a bind it’s nice to know there are regular train services available to many destinations through the country, even if they aren’t the cheapest. Waterways, rivers and lakes see a lot of traffic through the US, with the Great Lakes seeing a great deal. Services can be for transport or simply touristic purposes, and most are at the very least affordable, if not also comfortable and reliable. Internal flights are some of the most popular methods of travelling the country, if only because of the sheer size of the nation, along with the affordability of national flights. Many discount fares can be obtained through a number of means, and bargains can be picked up by those willing to wait on cancellations.
